Drug Addiction Rehab

When a loved one is suffering from an addiction–an inability to stop using harmful substances even when the consequences are severe–it can put everyone around that person in a state of high stress and anxiety. If you are feeling hopeless as you watch a loved one’s downward spiral, know that you are not alone and that treatment is available. It’s never too late. At our drug addiction treatment center, we will help your loved one build the foundation for a substance-free life.

English Mountain Recovery is a nationally recognized 36-bed addiction treatment center facility situated on a beautiful 27-acre campus in the heart of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee. For over 10 years, our compassionate clinical team has provided life-changing care to people suffering from alcohol and drug addiction and any co-occurring mental health disorders. We also care for you, the family member.

Program Overview

Our drug addiction treatment center offers a full continuum of care, from medical detox to alumni and aftercare programming. We are also one of just a handful of residential drug rehab programs that offer gender specific inpatient treatment. Our unique 30- to 90-day rehab combines a traditional 12-step approach with holistic care to enable each individual client’s journey of self-discovery and whole-person healing. Let’s take a closer look at each step of the program your loved one will experience.

Detox:

Detox is the first hurdle in the recovery process, and, understandably, many people resist treatment because they are afraid of the physical, mental, and emotional pain of detox. Why is detox so painful? When someone has been using substances heavily and/or for a long time, their body and brain are forced to adapt. Over time, the body starts to depend on these substances to function “normally.” When the substances are removed from the system, the body puts up a fight. This fight is called withdrawal, and withdrawal symptoms can be quite severe–even life-threatening in some cases.

While it can be dangerous to detox at home, detoxing in a facility where you are cared for by doctors, nurses, and therapists 24/7 can alleviate some of the worst withdrawal symptoms and ensure physical safety. Our detox facility, located near the main campus, offers around-the-clock, compassionate care with detox from any substance, including opiates, alcohol, and benzodiazepines. Detox typically lasts about a week, after which our clients transition to residential treatment.

Residential Treatment

Residential, or inpatient, treatment means that the client lives on our campus and participates in a highly structured level of programming each day. Residential treatment is, at minimum, 30 days because we know that length of stay provides our clients with a better chance of sustaining sobriety long-term. Many of our clients stay longer than 30 days, up to 3 months or more.

No matter how long your loved one stays in our program, 100% of participants receive transitional care to help them find long-term stability in their home environment. We work with each client to provide individualized referrals for ongoing therapy as well as extended care and sober living options.

At English Mountain Recovery, we know that time is a client’s best friend, and we will always encourage our clients to spend as much time in treatment as their lives will accommodate. More and more doctors and therapists are recognizing that longer programs decrease the likelihood of relapse. In fact, a National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) publication reports that “most addicted individuals need at least 3 months in treatment to significantly reduce or stop their drug use.”

Recovery programs lasting 90+ days are particularly helpful for people whose addictions are severe or long-standing and who face the following situations:

What Makes Our Residential Program Unique

Our drug addiction treatment program is built on a combination of evidence-based traditional therapy modalities, a 12-step curriculum, psychoeducation, relapse prevention, and SMART recovery. Our therapists are trained in a variety of therapy styles proven effective in addition treatment, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational interviewing. We also help clients develop their physical health with recreational opportunities and their spiritual health with meditation and mindfulness training. In addition, we offer the following:

Gender-specific therapy:

Not everyone experiences addiction in the same way. In particular, men and women deal with different addiction risk factors and therapeutic needs. The English Mountain Recovery team provides gender-specific recovery environments so that men and women can feel safe in being vulnerable and truthful in group therapy sessions.

Men, for example, tend to struggle more with emotional expression, anger management, and being open about past trauma. While women can struggle in these areas as well, they often have more needs surrounding childcare responsibilities and may have experienced domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Both men and women receive treatment that emphasizes the following themes:

  • Family systems & parenting
  • Trauma triggers
  • Healthy emotional exploration
  • Workplace & professional pressures
  • Spirituality

Veteran-specific therapy:

English Mountain Recovery welcomes the men and women who have served our country. Because of the trauma they can experience on duty and the difficulty of integrating back into the community after their service ends, veterans are at higher risk for developing substance use disorder and mental health disorders. Our Tactical Recovery Program helps veterans connect with each other and begin the journey to a substance-free life.

Throughout a long-term stay at our facility, veterans work with counselors who are trained in helping clients understand and manage any mental health disorder that may accompany the substance addiction. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder are all common in veterans.

Because we understand how powerful it is for veterans to connect with each other, we developed the Battle Buddies Program. In this program, each of our newly admitted veterans are paired with another veteran who has already completed part of the program. This mentoring relationship goes a long way in helping each client feel seen, understood, and inspired to continue on the healing path.

In addition to the core elements of our drug rehab program (detox, group and individual therapy, and a 12-step curriculum), EMR’s veteran-specific rehab includes a full spectrum of holistic programming options that we offer to all residents.

Holistic therapy:

Holistic therapy addresses the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. At English Mountain Recovery, we believe that addiction recovery requires a full commitment to healing on all levels. To that end, we offer a variety of holistic therapies. Such therapy modalities can help clients to:

  • Increase self-awareness and self-esteem
  • Express fears and emotions difficult to verbalize
  • Enhance communication skills about recovery/addiction experiences
  • Process traumatic events
  • Manage destructive behaviors
  • Deal with stress and anxiety
  • Gain greater comfort, freedom, and hope

We offer the following types of holistic therapy in our program:

  • Creative art therapy is one way clients can experience the therapeutic process in a fresh, exciting way. Based on each client’s unique history and goals, our staff can recommend a variety of forms of art therapy, including painting, drawing, collage, creating rock sculptures, writing, and participating in skits.
  • Equine interaction experience allows clients to spend time with and care for horses. Establishing trust and learning how to communicate with a horse can have tremendous therapeutic benefits. Clients can better identify their treatment issues, bond with each other, and enhance their communication skills.
  • Experiential therapy is a broad term that includes creative arts and equine interaction, among many other hands-on activities. At EMR, we use the term to refer to our low ropes courses, which are both fun and therapeutic. Navigating these courses help our clients let down their guard, become more attuned to their physical body, and rebuild their self-worth. Clients learn to ask for help, plan ahead, and set realistic goals.
  • Other holistic therapies and activities include training in meditation and mindfulness, recreation opportunities (weight room, basketball court, hiking areas, swimming pool), and hypnotherapy.

Family program:

At English Mountain Recovery, our team understands the importance of the family in helping a loved one overcome addiction. We also know how stressful addiction can be to the family unit and how family communication and trust can break down as the addiction continues.

Our family program at English Mountain Recovery allows family members to participate in a client’s recovery and begin the healing process. Our caring and credentialed staff will helps the family to do the following:

  • Improve communication. Addiction breaks down communication quickly. The addicted person will lie to hide their use or to gain access to substances. Family members may lie for the addicted person, to help them avoid trouble at work or with extended family. These lies destroy family members’ ability to trust each other. In our family program, family members will learn new strategies for communicating with each other in healthy and compassionate ways. Families learn to watch for patterns in how conflict arises and what tends to trigger it. They learn how to solve problems and resolve conflicts more peacefully.
  • Avoid unhealthy patterns. Families affected by addiction tend to fall into unhealthy dynamics of enabling the addiction and engaging in codependent interactions. These behavior patterns just prolong the addiction and the emotional pain that everyone feels. Our program teaches family members to create boundaries that support their well-being and to develop a stronger sense of self that will help prevent enabling behaviors.
  • Heal emotional scars. The breakdown of trust, lack of communication, and high stress levels caused by addiction create emotional scars that can be difficult to overcome. Therapists work with the family to address any resentments that have built up and take steps to overcome the emotional pain caused by the addiction.

Alumni program:

The end of a client’s time in residential treatment is not the end of our relationship with them. After completing any level of treatment, clients are invited to enroll in English Mountain’s alumni program–a program that provides resources and support at no cost, long after treatment ends.

To help you navigate our extensive Alumni program, we will introduce you to our Alumni Coordinator. This person can help you find recovery resources in your area, introduce you to fellow alumni in your community and online, answer recovery questions, talk to you whenever you need to hear from someone who cares about your journey.

In addition to the personal guidance of our alumni coordinator, clients also receive access to our CaredFor app, a resource clients can use on a computer or smartphone to post messages and photos, track sobriety days, find recovery tools, and direct-message administrators.

We also provide:

  • A monthly alumni e-newsletter with information about other alumni, upcoming alumni events, contests, recovery tips, and much more
  • Frequent phone calls to check in and see you’re doing
  • Weekly alumni virtual meetings
  • Monthly in-person group alumni activities with EMR staff
  • Yearly reunions

At English Mountain Recovery, we believe that the opposite of addiction is connection. If you are struggling with the pain and loneliness of addiction, now is the time to reach out and find out more about what our drug rehab center in Sevierville, Tennessee, can offer you and your family.
